It is estimated that up to 30 per cent of hospital staff could be off work due to personal illness or illness of family members due to H1N1. The potential shortage of staff, combined with the increase in admissions of patients with H1N1, are major concerns.

UHN has a comprehensive infection control strategy in place, ensuring that staff are well prepared, vaccinated and given the appropriate preventive medications. It is a reality, however, that they will face tremendous stress in their jobs.

To keep its frontline healthcare staff healthy and functioning effectively, UHN is implementing a "resiliency" program. The program is designed to provide education and professional development for health care professionals for dealing with H1N1.
