UHN Senior Scientist Dr. Eleanor Fish is at the forefront of infectious disease research and clinical management.
During the SARS outbreak in 2003, Dr. Fish initiated a clinical study in SARS patients treating them with an antiviral drug, interferon. She and her team had accumulated evidence in the lab that interferon killed the virus. Building on this research, Dr. Fish will start another clinical study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of interferon in hospitalized H1N1 infected patients. She has accumulated compelling evidence that interferon kills the virus in cells, in infected small animals and in human lung tissues.
Antiviral drug to combat H1N1
The potential for adding a new antiviral to combat pandemic H1N1 is very real. Interferon is approved for use in Canada - so this is only a new application, hence could be fast-tracked if her initial results show efficacy. Dr. Fish’s need is urgent.
The first site to proceed with the clinical study will be University Health Network. Dr. Fish needs private funding to move this trial forward in the fastest way possible. Her immediate focus is conducting the first phase of clinical trials.
