A grateful patient pays tribute to a legendary cardiologist
International food merchant Timothy Chisholm built a career in pursuit of excellence and so he immediately recognized that very quality in the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and, in particular, in Dr. Susan Lenkei. In fact, he was so impressed by the calibre of her care that he decided to honour her dedication and brilliance with a lasting tribute gift of $1 million.
Timothy Chisholm did not stop at simply making his own gift, however. He inspired Peter Munk and an anonymous donor – also patients of Dr. Lenkei – to lend their support. First, Peter Munk, with his wife Melanie, provided a $1 million match to the original fund; and then, when the second donor learned of the plans, he quickly came in with a gift of $500,000. Through the power of partnership and philanthropy, they created the Dr. Susan Lenkei Catheterization Laboratory. Such appreciation for Dr. Lenkei is no surprise, given the dedication she has shown to her patients throughout her career. Her history with Toronto General Hospital spans 50 years and during that time she has made an indelible mark on the cardiology division.
At the new laboratory, novel “image-guided therapies” for life-threatening heart rhythm disturbances will be performed and pacemaker devices implanted. As imaging technology evolves, the lab will be used for additional procedures.
