Honouring those who have made significant contributions to our hospital, the Upper Canada Medal represents and important part of our history.
The Upper Canada Medal was originally created by the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Upper Canada to recognize the distinguished service and bravery of volunteer soldiers in the War of 1812. Recognizing an even greater need, the Society decided to reduce the medals to gold bullion that was then used in 1829 to establish the first general hospital in Canada.
Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation continues to honour both the original intent of the medals, to recognize distinguished service, and their later role in supporting the public good.
