In 2008/2009, University Health Network made international headlines with a number of firsts: a successful transplant of reconditioned lungs; growing heart cells from stem cells, representing a significant step towards the creation of
functioning heart tissue; and the development of a Surgical Patient Safety Checklist that improves surgical outcomes for patients around the world.
These achievements, as well as many others, were fostered by UHN’s culture of leadership, innovation and discovery. They were only possible because of the generosity of our community of donors. Each one of our donors shares in the celebration of these achievements. Your gifts, donations and pledges are the
fuel for our researchers and medical leaders. Your support enables their passion for excellence and their drive to challenge the status quo.
We are tremendously proud to share a selection of stories illustrating the many faces and means of philanthropy. With support like yours, we look forward to more “firsts” in the years to come.

The TG&WHF Board of Directors, staff and UHN hospital leadership extend a heartfelt thank you to David W. Smith
whose term as Chair of our Foundation Board has come to completion.
Over the past five years, David will be remembered for many significant Foundation “firsts”, including:
-
Launch of the “champion” model where board members, UHN leaders, and Foundation staff work together to match hospital priorities with campaign goals;
-
First five-year strategic plan for the Foundation;
-
First Board review and evaluation process; and
-
Launch of the Enterprise Risk Management program.
Whether it was using his golf skills for a great cause, or meeting royalty, David has seen the Foundation through five years of remarkable growth. |
“David’s integrity, corporate
governance expertise and
dedication to long-term
planning has positioned
Toronto General & Western
Hospital Foundation as one of the most successful hospital foundations in Canada.”
