In 2008 the Ministry of Health released data indicating that the best surgical outcomes in Ontario were achieved at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. These results speak to the superb quality of the Cardiac Surgical Program, which has been built by Division Head Dr. Tirone David and his colleagues. With the leadership of Dr. Barry Rubin, Medical Director of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (pictured right), a Centre of Excellence for Vascular Surgery has been established within the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto. The centre now provides support for all complex vascular surgery cases. A major milestone for the I3 Centre (Imagining, Intervention, Innovation) was the installation of a 320-slice CT scanner – the only one in Canada – representing the very latest advance in computed tomography. The inspiration behind the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre The first attempts at open-heart surgery began at TGH in the 1940s and 50s. In 1951 Dr. Wilfred Bigelow developed and tested the first artificial cardiac pacemaker for human use. The opening of the Cardiovascular Investigative Unit at TGH in 1956 established one of the first permanent open-heart surgery teams in Canada. Since the inception of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in 1997, thanks to the exceptional vision and generosity of Peter and Melanie Munk, the Centre has become a leading referral centre for cardiac patients worldwide, handling 20,000 patient visits to specialized clinics and 1,700 open-heart surgeries annually. The Centre’s goal is to lead the future of cardiovascular care through discovery and unprecedented technological breakthroughs. |
