"The need for diabetes research and education is great. Since the discovery of insulin, many assume that diabetes is ‘under control.’ In fact, it is a major health threat.”

As Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Toronto and a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute, Dr. Gary Lewis focuses on understanding the mechanisms responsible for the very high rates of cardiovascular disease in people affected by diabetes; in particular, the abnormalities in cholesterol and blood fats that so commonly occur in those with diabetes.Holder of a Canada Research Chair in Diabetes and a Professor at the University of Toronto, Dr. Lewis, through his research, is helping scientists to understand the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes, as well as in those with insulin resistance, who are highly susceptible to the disease.

Through a new partnership between UHN and the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre, University of Toronto, diabetes will be fought with a larger reserve of scientists. In April, researchers at UHN identified a new pathway of regulation of metabolisms by the body, and a potential drug target for diabetes.
