Toronto General Hospital

Toronto General HospitalDuring the War of 1812, soldiers received medical care in a small military hospital that later became the site of Toronto General Hospital. After the war, the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Upper Canada donated their distinguished service medals, which were melted down into gold bullion, to provide the funds to build the new hospital. This hospital, the first in Upper Canada, opened to the public in 1829.

In the early 1900s, TGH moved to its current location at the corner of University Avenue and College Street. The entrance to the old College Street Wing , the first building to be erected, has been preserved and incorporated into the new Medical and Related Sciences (MaRS) building, an exciting venture uniting business with research. The former Bell Wing, at University and Gerrard, is now the site of the new Clinical Services Building (CSB), where TGH continues to provide exemplary patient care and world leading programs.

Toronto Western Hospital

Toronto Western HospitalIn 1896, a group of 12 doctors founded Toronto Western Hospital in a converted farmhouse at Bathurst and Dundas Streets to serve the city’s west end. From the beginning, TWH developed strong relationships with the many ethnic groups that settled in the area, providing specialized care to a culturally diverse population.

A new Emergency Department, renovated West Wing, open-design Atrium, and the Krembil Neuroscience Centre have transformed the venerable ‘Western’ into a world class healthcare facility. The new East Wing, with nine floors of technologically advanced clinics, opened in January 2005.
